I am a world class scientist/entrepreneur in the field of aquaculture. My goal is to establish a sustainable, fully integrated aquaculture business providing organically grown fish, prawns and vegetables for domestic and international markets. In the past there have been a few attempts to establish a viable prawn aquaculture industry in South Africa but these have failed due to lack of market competiveness, poor location choices and the absence of commercially orientated vision by project directors. There currently exists a tremendous lucrative opportunity to produce farm fresh prawns in South Africa. The prawn fishery in South Africa is limited to producing less than 100 tons/yr, with the majority of the current demand provided by poor quality, frozen, chemically treated prawns imported from Asian countries. The time has come for South Africa to become the leader of prawn aquaculture in Africa, and a strong competitor in international markets.
